There is not one face of accidental bowel leakage (ABL). Many different types of people are affected by ABL and there are a number of common causes of ABL. Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diabetes, neurologic problems, radiation to the pelvic floor, or trauma because of either an accident or vaginal birth are common causes associated with ABL.

According to Heidi Brown, M.D., assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, “we need to do a better job realizing that anybody can have ABL and there are things that anybody with ABL can do to make it better.”
